Outdated and overloaded electrical panels are one of the leading causes of residential house fires in the United States – and in Cincinnati, where roughly 40.8% of homes predate 1940 and the median build year is 1951, the problem is more widespread than most homeowners realize. A panel that’s still technically working isn’t necessarily safe. Original fuse boxes in Northside two-flats, 100-amp breaker panels in Walnut Hills craftsmen, aging mid-century panels in Clifton and Hyde Park are still around. None, however, were built for the electrical demands of a modern household, and none of them show obvious warning signs until something goes wrong.
Arlinghaus repairs, installs, and upgrades electrical panels throughout Cincinnati and Hamilton, Butler, and Clermont Counties. We assess the situation honestly, tell you whether a repair addresses the problem or a full upgrade is the right call, and give you upfront pricing before any work begins. Every job is performed by a licensed electrician and backed by our Happy House Seal of Approval guarantee. With 7,000+ reviews and a 4.9-star rating and Best in Cincinnati recognition, Cincinnati homeowners trust us with work that genuinely matters.

Cincinnati’s housing age makes this a more pressing issue here than it would be in a newer construction market. In neighborhoods like Northside, Walnut Hills, Hyde Park, and Clifton, original fuse boxes and early-generation breaker panels are still common, in some cases unchanged since the home was built. Fuse boxes weren’t designed for the electrical loads modern households run, don’t offer the arc-fault protection of modern breakers, and can’t be simply upgraded with new breakers the way a modern panel can.
Mid-century homes built during Cincinnati’s postwar expansion present a different but related issue: 100-amp service panels installed in the 1950s and 1960s were sized for appliance loads that are a fraction of what most households draw today. A 100-amp panel serving a home with central HVAC, a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, and a growing roster of always-on electronics is often running near or at capacity, and adding anything new, from an EV charger to a finished basement, pushes it over.
Cincinnati’s storm seasons add urgency for a different reason. A panel that’s marginal under normal conditions can fail during a power restoration event after a summer thunderstorm or a winter ice storm, exactly when you need reliable service most.
Repair is the right call when the problem is isolated, like a single failing breaker, a loose connection at a specific circuit, or a wiring issue that doesn’t reflect the panel’s overall condition. A panel in otherwise good condition with adequate capacity can often be repaired without a full replacement.
Replacement is the more appropriate answer when:
We give you a clear recommendation after the assessment. If repair addresses the problem, that’s what we’ll do. If replacement is the honest answer, we’ll explain why and let you decide.
Panel work varies more in cost than most electrical jobs because the scope can range significantly depending on what your home actually needs. A few factors that consistently affect the price:
Amperage upgrade: Moving from 100-amp to 200-amp service is one of the most common panel projects in Cincinnati’s older housing stock. The larger the service upgrade, the more it involves, including utility coordination with Duke Energy Ohio for the service entrance.
Panel condition and wiring: Older Cincinnati homes sometimes have aluminum branch wiring or knob-and-tube remnants that need to be addressed as part of a panel upgrade, affecting the overall scope.
Permit requirements: All panel work in Cincinnati requires permits through the City of Cincinnati Department of Buildings & Inspections. Permit fees are factored into the upfront price Arlinghaus provides before work begins.
Access and existing conditions: Panels in finished spaces, tight utility rooms, or homes with complicated service entrance configurations require more labor than straightforward open-access installations.
Panel upgrades are among the higher-cost electrical projects a homeowner will take on – and in Cincinnati’s older neighborhoods, they’re often less optional than they seem. Financing through Synchrony is available to help spread that cost, with a straightforward application and immediate credit upon approval. Arlinghaus provides upfront pricing after the assessment – you’ll know the full cost before any work begins, and no estimates change once we’re inside the panel.
Whether you’re dealing with a specific warning sign or you haven’t had your panel professionally evaluated in years, Arlinghaus can assess it honestly and handle the work correctly. Call us to schedule anywhere across Cincinnati and Hamilton County – same-day service available for urgent situations.
