Technician rewiring electrical panel

Faulty wiring is the leading cause of residential house fires in the United States. In Cincinnati, where a large share of homes still carry original or early-generation wiring systems, that risk is more than theoretical. Knob-and-tube wiring installed in the 1920s and 1930s wasn’t designed for the electrical loads a modern household puts on it. Aluminum branch wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s expands and contracts differently than copper at connection points, creating loose connections that generate heat over time. Neither of these failure modes announces itself before something goes wrong.

Arlinghaus handles partial and whole-home electrical rewiring throughout Cincinnati and Hamilton, Butler, and Clermont Counties– from targeted circuit upgrades and aluminum wire remediation to full rewires of older homes that have been running on original wiring for decades. Every job is performed by a licensed electrician, quoted with upfront pricing, and backed by our Happy House Seal of Approval guarantee. With 7,000+ reviews and a 4.9-star rating and Best in Cincinnati recognition, Cincinnati homeowners trust us with this work.

Signs You Need Electrical Rewiring

  • Frequently tripping breakers signals a panel that can’t handle the home’s load
  • Two-prong outlets throughout the home suggest original wiring without a ground conductor
  • Flickering or dimming lights not tied to a specific fixture or appliance
  • Outlets or switches that feel warm, spark, or make buzzing sounds
  • A burning smell anywhere in the home without an obvious source
  • Visible scorch marks on outlets, switch plates, or the panel
  • An older fuse box rather than a modern breaker panel
  • Repeated GFCI trips that don’t resolve with a reset

Any one of these warrants a professional evaluation. More than one warrants treating it as urgent.

Our service tech was knowledgeable and took the time to show us what was going on with our AC unit. I was kept up to date with texts throughout the process before he arrived. He took the time to ask if we had any questions. Would highly recommend Arlinghaus!
Arlinghaus was great to get someone to my home immediately as I was dealing with a burst pipe. Mike Thomas was so kind and professional, and thorough in his work. The rates were very reasonable for the wonderful service provided. I certainly will be calling them back if I have any future issues (though I hope I don't!)
I contacted Arlinghaus to have our hot water heater replaced and water softener system installed. The two techs that came out and worked on our project, Derek Mullins and Claude Jones, were excellent! Super nice guys, kept us informed, and did a fantastic job on our house. I appreciate their professional manner and knowledge on this job and I would recommend them for future work. Thank you guys for restoring the hot water in our house and for installing our new water softener, we are so happy for these upgrades!!

Why So Many Cincinnati Homes Need Rewiring

Cincinnati’s median home was built in 1951, and roughly 40.8% of homes predate 1940. That puts a significant share of Cincinnati’s housing stock squarely in the two wiring eras that drive the majority of rewiring conversations: the knob-and-tube era that predates the 1940s, and the aluminum wiring era that ran through parts of the 1960s and early 1970s.

In older urban neighborhoods like Northside, Walnut Hills, Hyde Park, and Clifton, homes built before 1940 are common enough that knob-and-tube wiring is still a routine finding on electrical inspections. In mid-century neighborhoods built during Cincinnati’s postwar expansion, aluminum branch wiring was a common cost-saving material during a period when copper prices were elevated, so homes built roughly between 1965 and 1973 may have aluminum wiring that requires evaluation or remediation rather than a full rewire.

Neither wiring type is automatically a crisis. But both require professional evaluation before additional electrical loads are added, and both carry risks that copper wiring in good condition doesn’t.

Knob-and-Tube and Aluminum Wiring: What Cincinnati Homeowners Should Know

Knob-and-tube wiring runs individual conductors through ceramic knobs and tubes without a ground conductor. It was standard through the 1930s and into the early 1940s. The risks in occupied homes:

  • No ground conductor: ungrounded outlets with no path for fault current
  • Sized for electrical loads a fraction of what modern households draw
  • Insulation that becomes brittle over time, particularly where covered by attic insulation in renovated homes
  • Incompatible with AFCI breaker protection required by current code for bedroom circuits

Many insurance providers restrict or surcharge coverage for homes with active knob-and-tube wiring.

Aluminum branch wiring was used for individual circuit runs during roughly 1965–1973. The risk is at connection points: aluminum expands and contracts at a different rate than copper, loosening connections over time and generating heat. Remediation options range from CO/ALR-rated devices at every connection point to full replacement of aluminum branch circuits with copper; a licensed electrician can assess which approach fits your home’s specific situation.

Types of Electrical Rewiring Projects

Whole-home rewire: Complete replacement of all branch circuit wiring. This is right for homes with active knob-and-tube throughout, heavily degraded insulation, or a panel that can’t support the current load.

Partial rewire: Targeted replacement of specific circuits: kitchens, bathrooms, or high-demand areas without requiring a full whole-home project.

Aluminum wire remediation: CO/ALR device replacement at connection points, or full replacement of aluminum branch circuits with copper, depending on extent and condition.

Circuit additions and upgrades: New circuits for EV chargers, dedicated home office equipment, or other high-draw additions that exceed existing circuit capacity.

Panel upgrades: Undersized or outdated panel replacement as part of a rewiring project or as a standalone upgrade.

How Often Should Cincinnati Homes Be Reviewed for Rewiring?

  • Homes built after 1985 with copper wiring: Every 3–5 years is a reasonable baseline
  • Homes built between 1965 and 1985: Every 2–3 years is best, including the aluminum wiring and panels approaching end of service life
  • Homes built before 1965 – particularly before 1940: Annual or every other year; Cincinnati’s pre-war neighborhoods have the highest concentration of original wiring systems
  • Any home showing warning signs: Immediately, regardless of the last inspection date

What Does Home Rewiring Cost in Cincinnati?

Rewiring cost varies more than almost any other electrical job. Scope is the biggest driver – a partial rewire or aluminum wire remediation costs substantially less than a full whole-home replacement. Home size and layout matter too, since more square footage and complex existing conditions mean more labor regardless of scope. If the panel needs replacement as part of the project, that adds to the overall cost, as does access – finished walls and plaster increase the labor involved in running new wiring through existing spaces. Permit fees are required for all rewiring work in Cincinnati and are factored into the upfront price Arlinghaus provides.

Whole-home rewiring is one of the larger investments a Cincinnati homeowner can make in their electrical system – and one of the most worthwhile in a city where a significant share of housing stock still carries aging wiring. Financing through Synchrony is available to make that investment manageable, with flexible payment options that don’t require putting the project off until the budget fully lines up. Arlinghaus provides upfront pricing after the system evaluation and the full cost is confirmed before any work begins.
