A standard drain snake breaks through a clog and opens a path. What it doesn’t do is clean the pipe. In Cincinnati’s older neighborhoods – where cast iron and clay tile drain lines have been accumulating grease, mineral scale, and root material for decades – that distinction matters more than it does in newer construction markets. Grease coating the interior walls, scale narrowing the flow area, root material clinging to rough cast iron surfaces – a snake passes through all of that without touching it. A week or a month later, the same drain is slow again, and the cycle repeats.
Hydro jetting ends that cycle. Using high-pressure water delivered through a specialized nozzle at up to 4,000 PSI, hydro jetting scours the full interior of the drain or sewer line – walls, joints, and all – removing the buildup that keeps bringing the clog back. Arlinghaus provides professional hydro jetting and other sewer line services throughout Cincinnati and Hamilton, Butler, and Clermont Counties, always preceded by a sewer camera inspection to confirm the method is appropriate for your pipe’s condition and material. With 7,000+ reviews and a 4.9-star rating and Best in Cincinnati recognition, Cincinnati homeowners trust us to make the right call – not just the faster one.

Hydro jetting uses a motorized pump to pressurize water and deliver it through a flexible hose and specialized nozzle into the drain or sewer line. The nozzle has forward-facing jets that cut through blockages and rear-facing jets that propel the hose forward through the pipe while simultaneously blasting the pipe walls clean.
Pressure is calibrated to the job – residential drain lines typically operate at 1,500 to 3,000 PSI, while main sewer lines and commercial applications may require up to 4,000 PSI. The right pressure for a given job depends on the pipe diameter, the material being cleared, and the material the pipe itself is made of. This is why camera inspection comes first: it confirms the pipe’s condition and material before any pressure is applied.
The nozzle advances from a cleanout access point through the full length of the line, clearing the clog and leaving the pipe interior clean rather than just passable. Water and loosened debris are flushed down the line as the nozzle advances.

Cincinnati’s winters are hard on aging pipe joints in ways that directly affect how quickly buildup accumulates. When temperatures drop sharply in January and February, the freeze-thaw cycle stresses cast iron connections and clay tile joints – pulling them slightly apart and contracting them back repeatedly over the course of a season. Over years, that movement creates micro-gaps at joints that weren’t there when the pipe was new. Those gaps catch grease, scale, and root material faster than an intact joint would, and they give roots from Cincinnati’s city-maintained street trees an entry point they’ll exploit.
Hard water compounds the effect. Greater Cincinnati Water Works delivers water at an average hardness of 126 mg/L (7 grains per gallon). That mineral content deposits calcium and magnesium scale on drain pipe interiors over time – narrowing the flow area and creating a rougher surface that catches grease and debris significantly faster than a clean pipe wall.
In Cincinnati’s older neighborhoods – Green Township, Springfield Township, Cheviot, and Westwood – these conditions converge on pipe materials that were already aging: original cast iron and clay tile lines that have been accumulating this combination of freeze-thaw stress, mineral scale, and root pressure for 60, 70, or 80 years. Snaking these lines clears a path. Hydro jetting clears the pipe.
Both are legitimate drain cleaning methods. The right choice depends on what’s in the pipe and how often the problem returns.
Drain snaking uses a mechanical cable to break up or retrieve a specific blockage. It’s the right first approach for most isolated residential clogs – a grease ball, hair accumulation, or a single obstruction that hasn’t built up along the full pipe wall. Snaking is faster, less equipment-intensive, and appropriate for the majority of drain calls.
Hydro jetting is the better choice when the pipe wall itself is the problem – significant grease coating, mineral scale, root material embedded at joint gaps, or recurring clogs that snaking has addressed multiple times without lasting results. It costs more than snaking and requires camera inspection first, but for pipes with substantial buildup, it’s the only method that actually cleans the line rather than punching through it.
A simple rule of thumb: if the clog is a first occurrence and the drain has been working normally, snaking is probably the right call. If the same drain has been on the call list more than once, hydro jetting addresses the underlying condition rather than the recurring symptom.
No – and this is where camera inspection matters most. High-pressure water can damage pipes that are already compromised, fragile, or made from materials that weren’t designed for this kind of stress.
PVC: Generally safe for hydro jetting at appropriate residential pressures. Modern PVC handles the method well as long as the pipe is structurally intact.
Cast iron: Safe for hydro jetting on pipes in good structural condition. Heavily corroded cast iron with significant wall thinning warrants lower pressure and careful assessment – camera inspection identifies whether the pipe is a reasonable candidate before any jetting begins.
Clay tile: Can be jetted safely when joints are intact and the pipe is structurally sound. The freeze-thaw joint stress common in Cincinnati’s older neighborhoods makes pre-jetting camera inspection especially important for clay tile lines – a joint that’s already separated shouldn’t be exposed to high-pressure water.
Orangeburg pipe: Should not be hydro jetted. Orangeburg is a composite pipe material made from layers of wood pulp and pitch that was used in some residential construction from the 1940s through the 1970s. It deteriorates when wet over time and has no structural resistance to high-pressure water – jetting an Orangeburg line risks collapsing it. Camera inspection identifies Orangeburg before any pressure is applied. If your home was built between 1945 and 1970 and has never had the drain lines assessed, this is a specific reason to get a camera inspection before any drain cleaning method is used.
Branch line hydro jetting typically runs $895–$1,500+ and includes a one-year warranty. Main line hydro jetting generally runs $1,695–$2,600+. A few factors affect where a job lands in those ranges:
Arlinghaus provides upfront pricing before any work begins – you know the full cost before we start. For main line jobs or commercial clearing where the total runs higher, financing is available to keep the right service within reach.
If a drain keeps coming back or hasn’t been properly cleaned in years, hydro jetting may be what finally holds. Call Arlinghaus to schedule anywhere across Cincinnati and Hamilton County – same-day appointments available.
