Not every drain problem needs to be replaced and not every slow drain is worth cleaning again. In Cincinnati, where roughly 40.8% of homes were built before 1940 and the median build year is 1951, a significant share of the city’s housing stock is running on cast iron and galvanized steel drain lines that have been in the ground for 60, 70, or 80 years. In neighborhoods like Delhi, Sayler Park, and Covedale, a drain that keeps clogging after cleaning isn’t always a cleaning problem, it’s often a pipe condition problem.
Arlinghaus replaces and installs kitchen, bathroom, tub, shower, and floor drains throughout Cincinnati and Hamilton, Butler, and Clermont Counties. We start with an honest diagnosis, cleaning is the right answer more often than replacement, and we only recommend replacement when the pipe’s condition actually calls for it. With 7,000+ reviews and a 4.9-star rating and Best in Cincinnati recognition, Cincinnati homeowners trust us with their drain services.

The culprit most homeowners don’t see coming is what’s in the water. Greater Cincinnati Water Works supplies 88% of the city’s drinking water from the Richard Miller Treatment Plant and delivers water at an average hardness of 126 mg/L (7 grains per gallon). Inside a cast iron or galvanized drain line, that mineral content doesn’t just coat the pipe wall, it compounds with internal corrosion already underway. Scale and rust layer together, narrowing the pipe from the inside out until a drain that seemed fine starts backing up repeatedly despite being professionally cleaned.
It’s a slow process that doesn’t always announce itself clearly. A drain might hold up well for 40 years before the internal surface deteriorates enough that every clog sticks faster than the last. When that threshold is crossed, cleaning buys weeks instead of months and at that point, replacement is the more honest answer. A camera inspection of the line takes the guesswork out of which situation you’re actually in.
Kitchen sink drains: Basket strainer assemblies, P-traps, and drain tailpieces. We replace corroded or failing kitchen drain components and install new drains as part of sink replacements or kitchen renovations.
Tub and shower drains: From simple drain body replacements to full drain line access where the drain flange has corroded through the subfloor; common in older Cincinnati homes where cast iron tub drains have been in place for decades.
Bathroom sink drains: Pop-up drain assemblies, P-traps, and drain tailpieces, often replaced alongside faucet or vanity work.
Floor drains: Basement and utility room floor drains that have corroded, cracked, or lost their trap seal, a particular concern in Cincinnati homes where basement floor drains are the last line of defense during heavy rain and sump pump events.
Outdoor and basement area drains: For homes on Cincinnati’s hillside lots in Westwood, Price Hill, and similar neighborhoods where clay-heavy soil and sloped terrain concentrate runoff toward the foundation, licensed plumbing installation of area drains and surface drainage connections is a real service need, distinct from landscaping or exterior waterproofing, and one we handle as a licensed plumber.
If a camera inspection or recurring main line backup points to a problem in the main sewer lateral itself, not just an interior drain, that’s a different scope of work involving trenchless or traditional sewer line repair and replacement. We handle that service as well. If your drain problem turns out to be a main line issue, we’ll tell you clearly and walk you through the options before any additional work is started.
Most drain replacements start at $300+, with the final price driven by the drain type, what’s required to access it, and whether any permit work applies – all covered in the factors below.
Replacement cost varies significantly depending on which drain is being replaced and what accessing it requires:
Arlinghaus provides upfront pricing before any work begins – no surprises on the invoice. If the inspection reveals a drain line that needs partial or full replacement, financing is available so the scope of the fix isn’t dictated by what’s convenient to spend right now.
If you’re dealing with a drain that keeps coming back or one that’s past the point of another cleaning, Arlinghaus can assess, recommend, and replace it correctly. Call us to schedule anywhere across Cincinnati and Hamilton County with same-day appointments available in most cases.

We are happy to give back to those communities through a variety of initiatives, some very public, others totally private. We’re a people-first company.
