The drain lines in your home are the main arteries of your home. If they become clogged, it’s like your house is having a heart attack and these clogged drains can lead to much larger problems. Our experts at Arlinghaus have pulled together some tips for knowing when it may be time to call a professional to unclog your pipes.

Know the common causes of clogs to prevent them

The most common drains that clog in a home are usually bathroom drains (primarily caused by hair buildup) and kitchen drains. To prevent these blockages, use drain stoppers in the kitchen and in your bathtubs/showers to catch stray food and hair from getting into your pipes. If you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen, always break up large food objects before grinding them and be sure to run water while the disposal is on. Avoid putting things like celery, bones, coffee grounds, fruit pits, grease, rice or pasta, and potato peels in the disposal. These items can often clog or break your disposal.

If you’re being diligent about keeping objects out of your drains and you’re still experiencing issues, there could be a larger problem at play. Sagging or broken drain lines can cause issues with drainage and lead water to collect under a home. A common cause of broken lines in the Cincinnati tri-state area is tree roots growing into clay sewer lines.

If you’re experiencing constant drain clogs, it is best to contact a professional so they can leverage cameras to inspect the lines to determine the extent of the damage.

Age is more than a number

In the case of a small clog using a plunger can be an easy way to fix the issue. While this can fix some small issues, there are larger issues to be aware of for older homes.

For example, many old homes have cast iron pipes that can rust and corrode over time. Eventually, this can lead to cracks in pipes and cause whole sections to disintegrate over time. If your home is more than 25 years old and you’re experiencing repeated backups, slow draining or unexplained odors, it would be best to call in a professional for an inspection.
