This summer, we wanted to acknowledge those heroes who were at the frontline of the COVID-19 outbreak by hosting a Healthcare Heroes contest, in which a local family was chosen to win a free AC unit installed by us. Healthcare employees were nominated on our website by friends and family, and winners were chosen by a panel of judges.
Receiving over 500 nominations over the course of 3 weeks, the judges had chosen a family: Kraig & Sarah Kniphfer of Northern Kentucky. Kraig Kniphfer is a critical care EMS at Children’s.
A little backstory on the Kniphfer family: On December 10, 2018, Kraig and Sarah Kniphfer, five months pregnant with their first child, found out that their precious baby girl, Karah Grace, has several medical issues. She only has one kidney, and the kidney she does have is not functioning. The doctor performed an amniocentesis right away and discovered baby Karah had little to no amniotic fluid in the womb (during the 2nd trimester the baby’s kidneys contribute to keep up the amniotic fluid volume). The Kniphfers moved to Kentucky 3 months ago to allow Karah Grace to be as close as possible to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. They uprooted their lives in Georgia without a second thought to do the absolute best for Karah Grace. Kraig has continued to work for a local hospital during the pandemic as Sarah has devoted every minute to Karah Grace.
Dwayne and Rachel purchased their foreclosed Erlanger home over 2 years ago. They live there with their 10 children. Dwayne is permanently disabled, and last year, Rachel was unemployed for several months while caring for her newborn.
This past spring, the 25-year-old heat pump in their home malfunctioned and replacement parts were unavailable due to the age of the equipment. The family had no financial resources to replace the heat pump. The most immediate concern was the health of their 7-year-old son who had been hospitalized twice in recent months from severe asthma. Air conditioning would be a vital aid for his medical condition.
In order to keep the family together and healthy in their home, St. Vincent de Paul Council authorized the purchase and installation of a new heat pump. Arlinghaus partnered with the Butler Foundation and 2J Supply HVAC Distributors to install the new unit. Arlinghaus was able to provide the pump at a discounted rate due to their “in kind” contribution.
The hope was to keep the family intact and to help them continue to move permanently out of poverty, empowering them to make life changes and improve the quality of their lives. During that difficult time, St. Barbara Conference helped with food, clothing, and utilities.
Rachel now has a job at DHL and her income covers the couple’s mortgage as well as other expenses.
