The traditional alternative to trenchless sewer repair is a trench – a long excavation through your yard, driveway, landscaping, or whatever happens to sit above the damaged pipe. For homeowners in Erlanger, Florence, and across the established neighborhoods of Northern Kentucky, that can mean digging through a mature garden that took twenty years to grow, cutting through a concrete driveway, or excavating beneath a deck or outbuilding. The bill for putting all of that back together often exceeds the cost of the pipe repair itself.
Trenchless sewer repair changes the math. Arlinghaus restores damaged sewer lines using pipe lining and pipe bursting methods that work from inside the existing pipe, typically requiring only one or two small access points rather than a full excavation trench. For NKY homeowners dealing with the clay tile, Orangeburg, and aging cast iron sewer laterals common in homes built before 1980, trenchless is often the most practical and least disruptive path to a restored sewer line. We provide trenchless sewer repair throughout Erlanger, Florence, Covington, Newport, Independence, and all of Northern Kentucky.

Traditional sewer repair requires excavating the full length of the damaged pipe to access and replace it. Trenchless repair methods restore the pipe from the inside, using the existing pipe as a guide, requiring only small access holes at either end of the repair section rather than an open trench along the entire length.
Before any trenchless repair begins, Arlinghaus performs a sewer camera inspection to see exactly what’s happening inside the line. Camera inspection confirms the location, extent, and type of damage and determines which trenchless method is appropriate, or whether a different approach is needed. Not every damaged sewer line qualifies for trenchless repair; camera inspection is the only accurate way to know.

Cured-in-place pipe lining creates a new pipe inside the existing one without removing it. A flexible liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated against the interior pipe wall using air pressure. The resin cures in place, typically within one to three hours, bonding to the existing pipe and hardening into a smooth, seamless interior surface. Once cured, the inflation bladder is removed, leaving a structurally sound new pipe within the old one.
The cured liner is highly resistant to root intrusion, corrosion-resistant, and rated for a 50-year service life. CIPP is the preferred method when the existing pipe is cracked, corroded, or has localized damage but still has sufficient structural integrity to hold the liner during curing. It’s particularly effective for the aging cast iron and clay tile lines common in NKY homes where the pipe structure is intact but the interior surface has deteriorated.
Pipe bursting replaces the existing pipe entirely rather than lining it. A bursting head, a cone-shaped device slightly larger than the existing pipe, is pulled through the old pipe using a hydraulic machine. As it travels through the line, it fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling a new HDPE pipe in behind it.
The new HDPE pipe is installed in one continuous pull between two small access holes, no trench required along the pipe run. HDPE pipe is durable, root-resistant at joints, and rated for a 50+ year service life. Pipe bursting is the method of choice when the existing pipe is too deteriorated or corroded to support a liner, or when a full replacement is warranted based on the pipe’s overall condition.
| Trenchless | Traditional Excavation | |
| Excavation required | 1–2 small access holes | Full trench along pipe length |
| Landscape impact | Minimal | Significant: yard, driveway, plantings |
| Completion time | Typically same day | 2–5 days depending on scope |
| Property restoration | Minimal | May include driveway, landscaping |
| Pipe lifespan | 50+ years | 50+ years (new pipe) |
| Qualifications | Requires camera inspection to confirm | Works for most pipe conditions |
Traditional excavation remains the right approach when a pipe is completely collapsed, severely offset, or has a significant pipe belly that trenchless methods can’t address. Arlinghaus will always recommend the right method for your specific situation, not the most convenient one for us.
Trenchless repair is highly effective for many damaged sewer lines but not all. Here’s when it works and when it doesn’t:
Trenchless is a strong fit when:
Traditional excavation is the better approach when:
Camera inspection before any repair is the only way to make this determination accurately.
Trenchless sewer repair cost varies based on several factors:
Trenchless repair typically costs more upfront than a basic pipe cleaning but significantly less than the combined cost of traditional excavation plus property restoration. Arlinghaus provides upfront pricing before any work begins, camera inspection is the first step toward an accurate quote.
